We combine life coaching with state-of-the art drug treatment and mental health counseling designed to help clients effectively build their lives and embrace young adulthood. Clients receive intensive services while living in a supported and sober apartment. They graduate transitional drug and alcohol treatment well on their way down a new road of healthy living.
Establishing a clean and sober life plan ~ Working with your therapist and coach you will create a plan that promotes being free of drugs and alcohol, and what the stages of sobriety and living life sober
Establish a mental health/emotional plan ~ Combining all of your past history of any mental health challenges, any psychiatric diagnosis, med and psychiatric management, and gaining knowledge of your brain chemistry and how it is affects by internal and external events. It is also the core of our existence, as humans, to learn about our emotional makeup, so your therapist will help you set specific mental/emotional goals
Personal/individual goals ~ In order to individualize treatment, we ask you to set part of the agenda. We all have different wants, needs, dreams, and goals – so this aspect of treatment can be broad. Goals in this area should be unique to your circumstance. They may also be things like working on becoming more or less assertive, addressing codependency or people pleasing traits, working on childhood issues or trauma. Personal goals can include but are not limited to the following:
Individual family goals - working on family closeness, communication, separate ideation, enmeshment or codependency
Employment goals and time-lines - assist us in reaching our material goals and desires in life. In combination with education each of us should always strive to improve the basic answers to “who am I and what should I be doing?” Employment is one thing, Career is another – so at this point is life we feel you can set goals that are based in your identity to have a career or a job that will allow you to be who you really are.
Health goals – these are another aspect of our lives that we must attend to. Many of us have used substances or hurt ourselves. In order to live well we must pay attention to our physical being and ensure that we are free from disease, pain, and suffering. Living a healthy lifestyle often includes: diet, exercise, hygiene, medical care, and mental care.
Learn to identify and regulate your emotions in any situation ~ By understanding how we interpret events we can spend less time in emotional mind traps and open to a whole new world of seeing people.
We help you learn different kind of techniques to regulate your emotions that incorporate principles of mindfulness, distress tolerance and a process of “interpersonal effectiveness”
Recognizing you’re part of a community ~ “I don’t need anybody”, “people always let you down” – these are things that people say to protect themselves because they have not really learned how to see the world and learn to trust. Depending on someone else, and even more so, having people be able to depend on you, makes life a good thing. So as a community we find answers together – we don’t look down on you, because you and your knowledge of yourself and others are invaluable.
Develop Connected Relationships ~ Relationships work if you can trust someone, are open and honest with them and care about them even when they are not perfect. At New Roads, we really want you to learn who you are in relation to other people we want to celebrate and promote acceptance of individual differences and cultural diversity, which in turn can lead to a greater capacity for intimacy.
What and how we teach each other can have a significant impact on all of our lives. At New Roads we have the opportunity to address topics such as addiction, trauma, depression/anxiety, fear, deep family wounds and even race, class, and gender differences in a manner that is non-threatening and supportive.
Developing your own solid values, beliefs, and purpose ~ Your values, beliefs and purpose are what’s important and at the core of who you are. They may come from generations in your family, or they may be something you feel you need to be yourself even if it goes against others around you but is true to who you are. These can encompass principles, honesty and truth; they can help you decide who you are philosophically even in everyday life. This is the part of your life where we at New Roads respect your right and freedom to choose and believe in your own religion, spirituality, or God. We honor your choice of political party, in fact we encourage it. We respect any diverse culture, gender, race or identity stand you need to take in order to live a life that is happy and content.
Individual Identity Goals ~ At this stage of your life you already know things that are certain about who you are, but we ask you to deconstruct some of your ideas and make sure that who you say you are fits with who you really want to be - Establishing an identity that feels good and is actually true to your internal self takes a lifetime of experience, but there are areas and passions you can feel free to start looking at here at new Roads. - We ask that you set some goals regarding finding and knowing your identity, your passions and exploring who you are in relation to the world.
Develop Life Skills ~ From study skills for school, or figuring out your own finances, to creating a resume and the best way to apply and interview for a job, “life Skills” are kind of the nuts and bolts of navigating through our daily lives. Not everyone needs exactly the same approach, so at this point of the program we work with you to individualize your goals.
Developing overall “Life Competence” ~ BODY (The healthy physical realm), MIND (The pursuit and understanding of intellect, cognition and the process of thought), SPIRIT (Individual, Peer and Community integration leads to being good at being alive)
When we talk about Life competence at New Roads we are not saying hey you’re done – “no worries from here on in” - we are describing a kind of conscious competence. This is a phase of life where changes have been made and we are changed people but we still have to monitor and watch how we live; it’s not yet second nature to us. We have a new freedom and a way of knowing what to do. We have an ability to locate and use new emotional coping skills, relation skills and what are called pro-social ways of living, but we agree as a community that it takes daily focus.
Developing a “launching plan” (not just for work, school, or aftercare) ~ Think beyond just aftercare – yes - plan to have a set meeting schedule, or therapy appointments or family agreements in place – the nuts and bolts of what we call “daily maintenance”~ but because you have learned to stay in the moment, and not sabotage the day you can look to plan tomorrows and set some goals. Think beyond the immediate. What would give your life even greater meaning? Our advice to you at this point is to realize that because of what you have lived and gone through you are better and actually ahead of people who never experienced what you did. You are exponentially valued because of it.
Pay it forward –“Legacy project” ~ Each New Roads client will be asked to have a “legacy project”, a way to “pay it forward” and do for others – So - figure out a way to have the new you make a mark on the world – blankets for the homeless, raising funds for micro-loans to impoverished nations, reading to kids – Your identity will be key to what you decide to do! This project can be given focus when you and your therapist agree it’s a good time.
